Anu Ontronen is an upcoming mezzo-soprano from Finland. Her voice has been described as “big, rich, dark and wide, ideal for romantic repertoire” (Helsingin Sanomat, 8.1.2016).
She made her debut performance in September 2016 as Dritte Magd in Elektra, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Her other roles in Finnish National Opera include Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro and Mary in Der Fliegende Holländer.

Anu Ontronen has received an M.A. with distinction from Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien, where she graduated from opera class in 2016. She has been studying voice with Edith Lienbacher, acting with Reto Nickler and Aurelia Eggers, as well as repertoire and interpretation with Christoph Ulrich Meier. Roles performed as part of her studies include Arnalta in L’Incoronazione di Poppea and Mrs Quickly in Falstaff.

In 2014, Anu Ontronen won the shared first prize in the Kangasniemi singing competition. In the 2016 Lappeenranta singing competition, she won the shared second prize for female singers and the special prize for Lied recital.

Before her studies in Vienna, Anu Ontronen has been studying at Oulu University of Applied Sciences and Helsinki Metropolia. She has participated in master classes by Helen Donath, Krassimira Stoyanova, Franz Lukasovsky, and others.
